Church of San Lorenzo in Ponte
San Gimignano is full of churches, like many of the Tuscan villages. In addition to the Cathedral and the Church of Sant'Agostino, there is also a third religious place that deserves a visit: it is the Church of San Lorenzo in Ponte, one of the oldest in the village, where an ancient bridge once stood drawbridge (hence the name of the Church). The building is very small and was erected in the 13th century in Romanesque style, perhaps on the remains of a previous church. Inside there is the famous fresco of the Madonna and Child in Glory, a work to which the faithful of San Gimignano are very devoted and to which we owe the construction of the portico in the fifteenth century (portico which later became an oratory).
