Medieval Sources

Do not miss an important historical testimony that is located just outside the walls of the center: they are the Medieval Fountains, reachable via Porta delle Fonti and via delle Fonti, a slightly sloping but short lane. These ancient public sources, for a long time the only method of supplying water to the city, are made up of 10 stone arches, through which it is possible to admire the large tanks; the central ones are the oldest ones and date back to the 13th century. It is a very fascinating place rich in history, which will undoubtedly make it possible to better understand the uses and customs of San Gimignano from previous centuries.
